homemade bushings
so, after seeing the homemade abec11 bushings yesterday at gibson, i'm thinkin of making a set.
i have some gumballs laying around (from when my wheel overheated n seperated) that aren't ridable any more, was thinkin of using them. only prob is that they are 75a. i know using abec11's give you a bushing with a lot more rebound to it, but i dunno if that soft of a duro would be any good for my race deck.
prolly too soft in a jimz shape but what about barrels or a stim shape?
might try em anyway to throw on for sliding/carving but i'm just looking for some input/tips on this.

re bushings
ya man 75 would be preaty soft for a race deck, and becuase its abec11 it would have a lot of rebound so it would probobly turn out being to twitchy

Re: homemade bushings
it probably would'nt be a bad idea to experiment with casting your own. luckily making casts and preparing urethane isnt too hard, but it can get expensive.

Re: homemade bushings
well, if you're talking about preparing the kind of eurathane used for bushings and wheels, it's very hard to prepare.
Theres all sorts of vacumm equipment and not to mention incredibly noxious gases that come off the 'thane when mixing...
..theres a whole thread on the fish' where a guy makes his own bushings, it's hard not to get any bubbles in it especially.

I couldn't imagine the effort of making your own bushings being worth it. You could probably buy a dozen sets for the time and energy it would take to shape your own.

Re: homemade bushings
exactly, the best bet for making some bushings is just turning down old wheels on lathe..
cool to have custom ones, but still, in the end you'll probably find yourself using the ones you bought at a shop.

Re: homemade bushings
i made a bad mistake in assuming one would already have the compressor to de-gas the thane. if it came to making the shapes for the bushings i would just use regular bushings to make my mold. i do agree sorting through the different types of materials would make it expensive and time consuming and definitely would not be the path for one who is only planing on making one set, but it would be a fun experiment.

Re: homemade bushings
true but this is pretty much just for the experience / fun of it. and i have access to a lathe at a friends so it wouldn't be that hard to do really. anyhow, this is on the back burner for the moment, workin on bigger/better things right now :)cskate wrote:I couldn't imagine the effort of making your own bushings being worth it. Re: homemade bushings
so i was bored this morning n decided to get around to cuttin up one of the 75a gumballs. wanted to make a few different shapes but only finished 2 cause one is stuck in my holesaw n i can't get the sucker out for the life of me. they are a lil big, only had a 1 1/4" holesaw on hand.
i thought 75a would be too soft but really diggin em on my homemade 25" wb board. springy and uber-carvy.
very 'rough around the edges' but i was just screwin around anyhow.
good waste of a rainy morning :)
