Matt and Kim don't skateboard.

Post  billy_the_kid on Mon Nov 16, 2009 8:09 pm

I was checking out some of Matt and Kim's music videos and I stumbled across this one. Kinda funny but I know a few people who quit skating because of lack of health insurance. Bummer for them.

I have been the same way until now.(I have found the weather to have a larger affect on my skating habits than insurance)

I would have had a hard time paying for my e.r. bill and antibiotics if I didn't have insurance.

I'm not anti insurance.
Its bad jobs, and no money.

i just think its a bit
extreme to quit because of that.

skate smarter, you can skate harder.
it doesnt sound like he's trying his best every time.
doing something right hurts less.

that being said, i do have a blue cross application sitting next to me.
i'd like to get something, what does everyone have?
is it all through your jobs?

I just got keiser permente though work. I know that I have gotten lucky as I had spent a weekend sitting in a hospital as my brother was in the ER when he cracked his skull.(He is insured under my fathers plan since he is under 23)

As much as I'd like to let the entire health care-denial industry dry up and die, I have Blue Cross as well. Not through work sadly. It feels so good to be paying people I dislike so much. Those Regence guys will kick you out of the Kates Nips ditch in Albuquerque too, fuckers. How do they know we weren't going to make a competing company pay for it if we got hurt?

Luckily I'm covered under my parents until I'm 25. I agree that not having insurance is a lame excuse to not skate, but if you have a history of fucking yourself up skating then it might be smart to sit-it-out.

That's pretty silly that Regence was kicking people out of the ditches. Are they even allowed to do that? Sounds like they are stepping out of their jurisdiction.

When I had to self insure myself and the kids, the best deal I found was Lifewise. That was some time ago. I have an agent I worked with then who set me up and did some price comparisons. I can probably find his name if you want.

Kate's Nips ditch borders Regence headquarters, and fun is not allowed within sight.

I'm on Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia through my mom's work. After my accident I realized just how dangerous this shit is, I knew it was rough to begin with but I didn't quite understand the depth of it all. 4 days in the hospital and one surgery later I had a fat bill totaling up to over $46,000, not including all the follow-up x-rays, MRIs, and physical therapy. The grand total is now well over $50,000, and without health insurance, car insurance, and well-off parents, I probably would've had to drop out of college simply to work to pay off my medical bills.

If you don't have insurance and you skate or do other dangerous activities, I highly recommend rethinking your lifestyle or investing in insurance... I mean, shit, I never expected a car to smack me into oblivion during a controlled (outlaw... shh) race, and no one should have to prepare for something like that, but your better safe than sorry. Maybe you'll never need your health insurance for more than routine doctor's visits, in which case you're probably losing money on the deal, but at least you've got the peace of mind that if you do get in a serious accident, you're not totally fucked.

Chip you said it exactly like a lot of people need to hear it. Going without insurance is like playing russian roulette if you're doing anything remotely dangerous. You're gonna get hurt eventually and for most an injury like Chip's would leave someone without insurance basically in bankruptcy. The system is definitely flawed but you gotta have some form of insurance at least for the peace of mind. Not skating really isn't an option for most (or it shouldn't be)
